What is functional mental health?

Functional mental health is a whole-body approach to treating mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, attentional difficulties, distractibility, irritability, disordered eating, etc. This approach identifies the root causes of mental health challenges in order to treat and restore balance, and therefore health, to the brain and body.
The root causes of disturbance to an individual’s mood/emotional regulation, behavior, and cognition are unique to each patient. They may be genetic, biochemical, nutritional/dietary, hormonal, metabolic, lifestyle-related, or environmental. A functional medicine approach targets these root causes along with the underlying chemistry affecting the brain to promote healing and recovery. Functional mental health can also involve the use of precision medicine testing and treatment of deficiencies, imbalances, inflammation, infections and toxins. In this way we can help patients achieve healing beyond what traditional treatment can provide.

In contrast, conventional psychiatry relies heavily and primarily upon pharmaceuticals to reduce or mask the symptoms of mental illness. It assumes nearly every illness is due to a neurotransmitter imbalance that medication alone will resolve and alleviate the symptoms. However, there are far more factors that influence mental health than just neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. And medication alone will not resolve the root cause or underlying triggers. Functional psychiatry treats the underlying imbalances that are causing the symptoms in the first place. By resolving these imbalances, patients have a greater change at lasting recovery and overall wellness.

Functional mental health, in addition to using precision medicine testing and techniques, is also open to the use of the integrative elements of holistic/integrative medicine. These could include recommendations and referrals for massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and even reiki, metaphysical work, or other modalities, when appropriate and if patient is open to it.
Functional mental health provides an enhanced way to treat mental health conditions and care for the whole-person and not just the obvious and glaring symptoms.

Of note, psychotherapy will likely be recommended and may include psychodynamic therapy or specific referrals for CBT/DBT, trauma-informed psychotherapy, KAP, internal family systems work, EMDR, brain-spotting, somatic experiencing work etc.

Do you offer conventional/traditional mental health assistance?

Yes, we can take a more conventional approach if that is what you, as the patient, desires. Further, this practice does not eschew conventional psychiatry completely as there are many good and necessary treatments to be found in the conventional approach.

Can I transition from my current provider to your care?

Yes, you can transition your care to this. practice. We will work with you to ensure a smooth and supportive handoff, respecting the treatment you’ve received so far while creating a plan tailored to your needs. Regular follow-up appointments are recommended, typically every 2 to 3 months, to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. These check-ins provide an opportunity to collaborate on your care and address any ongoing or emerging concerns. If you’re currently taking psychiatric medications, we will carefully review your regimen and help manage any transitions or adjustments thoughtfully.
