Conventional Mental Health Medication Management
Conventional psychiatric medication management appointments typically focus on evaluating a your mental health symptoms, monitoring the effectiveness of prescribed medications, and making necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. Intakes/evaluations will be approximately one hour (or 50 minutes) long and will involve taking a thorough medical and mental health history. Follow up visits for psychiatric medication management are more brief (15–30 minutes) and center on symptom relief. Your symptoms are reviewed including mood, sleep, anxiety, and other relevant factors to determine if the current medication regimen is effective and well-tolerated. Adjustments, such as changing dosages or adding new medications, may be made based on your response or side effects. Holistic recommendations may also be made but without the benefit of the deep dive that is afforded by the full Integrative/Functional Mental Health Assessment. Recommendations or referrals for therapies such as trauma-informed psychotherapy, biofeedback, psychedelic assisted therapy, medication-assisted treatment for addiction, etc. may also be given.
Integrative/Functional Mental Health Assessment
The functional mental health assessment lasts approximately an hour and a half (70-80 minutes). It is an individualized evaluation that seeks to identify the root causes of mental health challenges by considering the interconnected factors affecting well-being. It goes beyond symptom management by exploring lifestyle, physical health, genetics, and psycho-social dynamics to create a comprehensive picture.
This assessment involves taking a detailed history of your life experiences, medical background, and current lifestyle, including nutrition, sleep, stress, and relationships. A core element of this assessment is the recognition of the mind-body connection. Physical health is seen as intrinsically linked to mental health, with special attention given to factors such as inflammation, gut-brain interactions, metabolic health including blood sugar regulation, immune function, hormone balance, genetic predispositions (e.g. neurotransmitter levels), environmental influences, and nutritional status (nutrient deficiencies, in particular), all of which can significantly influence mood, emotional stability, and overall well-being. Functional lab testing will be recommended as needed, to identify any helpful biomarkers related to the above-mentioned factors.
The aim is to create a care plan tailored to a person’s unique needs and personal goals. This plan may include lifestyle changes, stress management strategies, dietary adjustments, targeted supplements, and/or referrals for therapies such as trauma-informed psychotherapy, biofeedback, psychedelic assisted therapy, or medication assisted treatment for addiction, etc. It may also include prescription medications. By addressing the interconnected systems of the body, mind, and environment, a functional mental health assessment provides a holistic and personalized entry point to achieving optimal mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Integrative/Functional Mental Health Follow-up Visit
An integrative / functional mental health follow-up visit is a natural continuation of the first assessment. During these visits we will continue to explore the root causes of any mental health concerns. These appointments, tailored to your current needs, could last anywhere from 20 minutes to 50 minutes (or longer if necessary). They offer the time and space to review insights from prior lab testing, revisit ongoing concerns, or address new, specific issues that have emerged since our last meeting. Together, we will create an ongoing individualized plan of care that aligns with your goals and values.
Patient Advocacy Services
Patient Advocacy is dedicated to ensuring that individuals and their families receive the best possible medical care, options, and support. It is specifically offered for:
- Families who want to ensure a loved one’s care is managed effectively when they cannot be there in person such as is the case for many grown children living out of state and with older parents living in Western North Carolina.
- Individuals with disabilities, transient or permanent, living in institutional settings who wish to transition to community-based living. I can help to the patient and family create a tailored plan to facilitate this move, connecting them with the appropriate organizations to access resources and support. This approach empowers them to achieve greater independence and a fulfilling quality of life in a setting that aligns with goals and preferences.
- Individuals facing complex medical challenges or new diagnoses. I will advocate for accurate diagnoses and optimal treatments by staying informed on the latest research and, when needed, facilitating second and third opinions to explore all treatment avenues.
